  • hmm, BACKSTEET BOYS  upon closer examination of BSBs lyrics, turns out there is barely more than two sentences in their songs.  the students had mild interest in I WANT IT THAT WAY and i was reaching for things to write in the margin.  whatever.  i also did part of LOSE YOURSELF and that will be a toughy.  maybe 5 ppl will care tho.  wow, that would be a glorious day.

as pathetic as my teaching gig is, its not a bad job.  im not working hard and i have lots of other opportunities.  and the ppl here in my prefecture are really nice and cool.  which leads me to the next SCARY NEWS... i just got the first info about RECONTRACTING for a second year.  they want to know if i want to move schools or change to a different prefecture.  so basically, do i hate my job and if so, how much?  like enough to move very far away?  i know one 3rd year JET who changed from senior high to junior and he said the former school hates him and gives him evil looks when he drops by, but he is having a ball with the juniors.  i dont know.  even if it stays like this, i kind of like it.  i just have to accept certain things, like 15homeroom's attitude and ill be fine.  plus a lot of kids say hi in the hall now and i have a few more names down.  back to AGRO SCHOOL tomorrow for the first time in a while.  i ve forgotten most of their names by now.  we ll be doing HALLOWEEN til about CHRISTMAS i guess.  so will i stay another year?  im not sure, ill have to talk to the rents.  since i dont want to move cities or schools, i dont really have to decide til about FEBRUARY, but its always on ppls minds.  even other JETs who have already decided.  they want to know if you can be friends next year and stuff.  YIKES!  truth be told, the money is good, the rent is almost free, and i have a cat.  i dont think life will be this good in the states for quite a while, so im thinking i might stay for a second year.  anyway, what the hell will i do back there anyway?  go back to school?  HA.  ...i mean ....i might.  im just not ready to yet.  not to mention all the crap you need to do before to get INTO school.  shit man.  japan is looking good.

LOOKING FORWARD TO: hawaii of course.  julie will be there visiting home and i hear melis will be there too.  i dont know what s going to go on, but maybe we can drive around or fly around or swim or whatever you do to get together with other ppl in hawaii.

AND hip-hop: its sounding somewhat expensive, but also really fun.  i just need to find time in the week to make it work without ditching japanese class or badminton.  or showering.  i do that sometimes.  and of course i should probably get details from chanda first.  yippee.  britney and beyonce, watch out!

the students played BRITNEY: TOXIC on the PA today during lunch.  i was quite pleased.  unfortunately that song is already barely more than synthesized mumbling to an english speaker, so we cannot bring that to class.  boo.

APPLES TO APPLES!!!  yesterday at english club, YASUDA sensei had bought a new game.  she went to get it from her car while i played hangman with my 2 loyal club members: TAMAMI and SAORI.  (it s quite sad really, but we have fun).  when Yasuda sensei returned i found that she had APPLES TO APPLES!!  it was in japanese and english so playing was just a matter of learning a few simple rules.  i was wondering if they had changed some of the items for japan, but that question was answered when HIDEYOSHI TOYOTOMI came up.  no normal american would know him, but i know *I* am supposed to after taking JPN10.  Unfortunately, all i can muster is maybe he was a young warrior who was murdered in the water at a beach.  and even that might the wrong guy.  GENPEI wars and all-- its just mush in my head.  but MICHAEL JACKSON was still in there, thank god, to keep things interesting on the theme SCARY.  hehe.

OK HIDEYOSHI, i checked,  was some arrogant general dude around the late 1500s.  he tried to beat up on Korea and China.  things were looking good for a bit, but then they got beaten back to Japan.  he is the guy who said only samurai could carry arms.  now you are up on your history.  youre welcome.   i must be thinking about some poem or something with the beach scene murder.

LUCKY DAY AFTER! i went to the supermarket and used my own nylon bag.  at KYOEI, this gets you a stamp on a little card that appears to give you 100 yen off when you use it 10 times.  not bad.  i had too many bags in my house anyway.  i save them like a fiend.  so the other day i went to MARUNAKA and they gave me some other card that i didnt ask for.  it has a chip in it.  so i didnt feel like wading thru some explanation so i just took it and figured nothing of it.  when i went yesterday, i took the card out to use it again, probably for points or some crap,  turns out that its worth 20,000 yen!  that like almost 200 bux.  so i gave the card and went to pay, but it was already paid.  and WOW, i must have been the millionth customer or something.  that was a super surprise after a long day.  and then MASHI was waiting in stairwell.  WHAT A LIFE I LIVE!

LUNCH!  i keep forgetting to order lunch from the little old lady who collects the order sheet each day.  if i have early classes, i forget.  and i dont like to order first for some reason.  not like i ever know what im ordering anyway.  i can read a precious few kanji.  but the last coupla days i see her come in, then my eyes dart to the clock.  DAMN!  then i contemplate stopping her to add my name, decide against it and just try to remember not to steal anyone elses lunch at break time and go buy my own from a different little old lady who works at a bakery nearby.  weather's MARVELOUS lately tho so its a nice walk.

JANKEN: in case you didnt know, janken is rock paper scissor.  the little chant, i ve learned is the following: SAISSYO GU JANKEN HOI!  something like "first rock, janken yeah!" not sure what janken means.  worktank......maybe ill use the ILLUSTRATIVE (read: useless) dictionary.  hehe.

  • very wonderful and comprehensive post.

very much in tune with what's going on in my life as well, especially the bit about recontracting. I don't know for sure either, but if things continue to be glorious between me and the boy back home I think I'll be headed back come August. Going to go back to school to be an elementary school teacher. Sweet.

  • Wait, when we played rock paper scissor, we said something like "Jan-ken-pon".  Also, you know how we do "Rock, paper, scissor, shoot!" ?  Well, they just shoot on "pon" which is really disconcerting.  Also, if you tie, they immediately play again but with a different little chant.  I never learned the second chant because I was always too flustered by the immediate re-shooting!
